While the world stood still, so did our classroom... But it's time for many of us to go back now. We have done a good job of social distancing and staying at home. Fewer people are getting sick with the Corona virus! But we still need to be careful that we don't spread germs at school. To keep everyone safe, things are going to look a little different in our classroom and in the rest of the school. Not all of our friends will be there. Some will continue to stay at home and learn online. When we line up outside, we will need to stand on our own special star and keep our hands to ourselves. Our parents won't be able to come in the building with us. They will need to drop us off at the door. When we get to the door, Madame has placed a new "welcome" sign there. Without touching the sign, we can point to the greeting we want to use with Madame - a toe tap, a funny face (but no fingers in our mouths), a respectful bow, or a dance. Everyone entering the school needs to make sure they're healthy. If we're feeling sick at all in the morning, we will need to stay home to make sure that others don't get sick. Madame will have to do the same thing so there may be some days when she can't be at school. (Hopefully that won't happen!) As soon as we get into the building, we will need to wash our hands with soap for 20 seconds. Try singing the alphabet in French while you wash! In fact, we will be doing LOTS of hand-washing! We will wash our hands every time we leave the classroom and then again when we come back in. We will also wash our hands every time before we eat, and then again after we eat! Using hand sanitizer is also a great idea if you have any that you want to bring from home! The classroom looks a little different. Our green carpet has been rolled up and everyone will sit at their own desk or table. We need to keep our distance from each other. We will each have a bin with everything in it that we need for the day. We won't be able to use our coat hooks or the benches. Everything will need to stay at our table. Our coats can go on the back of our chairs. We will not be able to share toys, books or supplies with our friends or with Madame. Most of our toys will be put away. We need to limit the things that we touch so that we don't spread germs. We will not be able to share our snack or lunch food, either. If we need to get out of our seats, we will have to raise our hand to ask permission. We will need to stay out of any areas that are blocked off with blue tape. When we line up in class to go outside, each person will stand on one of the little blue pieces of tape on the floor so that we keep our bodies apart from each other. We will not be able to hug others, hold hands, or wrestle with our friends. Our new playground will be open and we will take turns with other classes to use it. The wood chip playground will also be open. But sometimes at recess and lunch, it won't be our turn to use either of the playgrounds. Sometimes it will be our turn to play in the field. When we are in the field, we won't be able to use any equipment and we can't play games like "tag" where we would have to touch our friends. Some fun things that we could do instead would be: - cloud watching - "Follow the leader" - "I Spy" - "20 questions" (we will practice this game in class!) - Rock, Paper, Scissors - "What time is it, Mr. Wolf?" (without tagging our friends) - Simon Says Friends from other classes might not be outside at the same time as us. When we are walking around the school building, we will notice that things look a little different, too. Some people might be wearing masks or gloves. There are arrows on the floor to show us which side of the hallway we should walk on so that we don't bump into other people. The water fountains are all closed. We will need to bring your own water bottle. We can fill it up at the sink in our classroom. When we need to use the bathroom, we will have to wait until there are only 2 other people in there before we can go in. While we wait, we will stand on the blue waiting lines outside of the bathroom. But don't worry! Madame will help us to figure all of this out! We will go to the bathroom as a group and will wait on those lines together. That way nobody is confused about when they are allowed to go in or out. There are many things that we WILL be able to do at school! It will be nice to be there again and to see some of our friends, even if we can't be close to them like we are in this picture! It will feel good to socialize with other kids at a distance. It will also feel good to learn at school. All of these changes at school won't last forever! The custodians will work hard to keep our school clean, and the teachers will work hard to keep everyone safe! When it is time, things at school will be more relaxed. But for now, everyone needs to follow these safety rules. Being cautious at school helps to keep everyone safe and healthy so that things can get back to normal as soon as possible! :-) Text based on the social story: "Returning to School During COVID-19" Here is a great video about how we can show our friends that we care, even though we will need to stay apart: |
