Spring Break is here! Hooray! We are all very excited about the many things we will be doing over the next two weeks - from "stay-cations" to airplane holidays to daycare fun days! Thank you to everyone for coming out to our parent teacher conferences. It's so great for the students to have their parents get a glimpse into their everyday 8:25 to 2:20 world. Today in Math we did some adding with pattern blocks to create pictures. We had fun trying to find the sums and complete the patterns. Madame also challenged us to use our pattern blocks in a STEM activity where we tried to make an umbrella using only the shapes on our table - and all before the bomb timer on the smartboard exploded! We also got to do some "Spring Rotations" today. We travelled as a group to a couple of different classrooms (Mme Whitelock's and Mme O'Shea's) to do some different activities, while Mrs. Lemmen's and Mrs. Sandhu's classes came to our room. We got to hunt for leprechauns, build structures, etc. We had a lot of fun! Mme Van Sickle took advantage of the used book sale at school this week to buy all kinds of new books for our classroom! We've been devouring superhero comics, glittery Star Wars stories, and Princess tales. Here Jonah uses his amazing reading skills to a read a new book to his friends. And we got to finish off our day with outside centres today with all of the K and K/1 classes! It was a great day! Happy Spring Break!
After last week's non-stop excitement and outings, things were a little more even keel for the last 5 days. We enjoyed learning a new addition game for Math, and have been challenging ourselves every day to write full sentences in our journals. Some of us in kindergarten still need help putting all the words together, but we are all getting really good at using our weekly dictée words to help us form sentences that make sense in French. A number of us became "home owners" for the first time this week and got our pictures on the wall of recognition. We have been saving our nickels and dimes and passed up the chance to get extra candy/toys to instead make an "investment" into our future so that we no longer have to pay rent. A couple of us even purchased some of our friends' homes so that THEY will now be paying rent to US. We are quite excited about that prospect. Others among us are perfectly happy to continue renting and Mme Van Sickle says that's just fine, too. In life, some of us want to be home owners while others among us prefer the freedom and flexibility of renting (not to mention the more immediate disposable income). ;-) On Thursday it was raining but that didn't stop us from going on our weekly nature walk to Hoffman Park. One student asked, "Is this a rainforest, since it's raining?" We are so happy that people seem to respect the forts that we have built in the forest. Every week that we return, the forts are still there and we are able to add to them. One of our forts even has two "floors" now - an upstairs and a downstairs. Tree stumps become fortresses, with kings sending out troops to battle. By the time Friday rolled around, the clouds had parted and we had beautiful weather for outside centres at Spirit Square with the rest of the French and English Ks and K/1 classes.
Well, nobody can accuse us of not having fun this week! Monday was "Hundreds Day" - the 100th school day of the year - so we celebrated! Mme Van Sickle and some of the students dressed up as 100-year-old people and we made "trailmix" with 100 different pieces of food, and made ourselves some old-timer 100 glasses. Tuesday was French Film Festival day! Riding on the city bus was quite a highlight, especially since there wasn't enough room for all of us to sit down. (*Insert concerned-teacher/mother face*). But we held on tight and made it there and back in one piece! The film was very cute - an animated movie called "Ernest et Celestine". When we returned to the school, we got together with our big buddies and did a science experiment where we attempted to make ice cream in a bag. Mme Van Sickle warned all of us that science experiments don't always work - that's why they're "experiments"... But, much to Mme's surprise... I mean... as Mme truly expected, the experiment was an amazing and delicious success! We all did a great job of shaking our bags hard enough and long enough that our cream did exactly what it was supposed to do! Wednesday was "Pink Shirt Day" with the idea of focusing on being kind to each other. Thursday we put that kindness into action and crashed the Intermediate classes' party (shhh!), joining them to hold signs along the road, inspiring people to be kind to each other. We had some great reactions from drivers going by! A big "thanks" to the Intermediates for letting us little people tag along! Friday was our final ice skating day. The kids once again showed their grit, their will, their perseverance, their...(ok, I'll stop now)...by walking all the way to the rink and back. It was a great morning! And thanks to the gorgeous weather outside, we got to join with the other K and K/1 classes for "outside centres" again this afternoon. Oh... and we learned some stuff this week, too! Promise!
