Wait!... Are you actually here reading this blog entry?? Even though it's the last day of school and all you want to do is grab a cold beverage, put your feet up, and relax? Well, in case you ARE actually reading this... WE DID IT!! We survived our COVID school year! A big "merci" to all the parents who helped out with our Amazing Race yesterday! We had so much fun with all of the challenges around the school and Spirit Square, and it really brought out our competitive sides! In the end, Team Alexandria, Alia, Layla and Keira arose victorious, crossing the red finish rope in record time! But we were all winners to Madame, especially with how hard we all worked, so each of us got to enjoy a popsicle treat, including the adults! We took on another new challenge this week, as well... slacklining! This was all thanks to the amazing gift that a bunch of us purchased for Madame! The first day that we tried to put it up, Madame was ill-prepared and it didn't end well. Let's just say that Mr. Severud saved the day and none of us got to try out the line that time. But alas, school is a place of learning... even for the teacher... and by the next day, Madame had it down! And we got to test our resiliency skills, our bravery, and our balance and coordination as we took turns making our way across the line. Set your eyes on the target - not on where your feet are going. Then, step out into the unknown, one foot at a time. There's a metaphor for life in there somewhere. We also checked up on our geocache this week. We've had so many visitors!! Madame is working on getting it uploaded as an official geocache on the app for more people to have fun discovering it. We've also had some new friends in the classroom this week. They have funny names - Biscuit ("cookie") and Pépite (short for "chocolate chip"). These little guys are Madame's new class pets and she says that we are welcome to come back and visit them any time next year! We've been feeding our friends hay and fresh vegetables, taking turns reading with them during quiet time, and have even been drawing pictures of them. The drawing on the green construction paper came with explicit instructions to be hung where the guinea pigs could see it. Unfortunately the guinea pigs thought the paper was a tasty treat so we were able to come to an understanding that the picture could be placed BESIDE the cage rather than BEHIND it. Biscuit became the crowd favourite after he was the one who let us hold him for an extended period of time. Today was our last class store day so we added up all the money we've been donating to foster children throughout the school year. Parents may remember that with our classroom economy, before students can purchase anything for themselves, they need to donate at least one nickel to the charity that we chose together. In total, we raised $15 since January when we began our program, and Madame promised to double our efforts. So we are now able to send off a cheque to SOS Children's Village BC. Other fun pics... Happy Summer, everyone! Please don't be strangers in September! It was "rainbow day" on Tuesday and after a torrential downpour, the sun began to emerge and we went on a rainbow hunt, convinced that we would find one because of the sun shining through the showers. We never did find our rainbow on Tuesday, but one finally showed up on our ice cream adventure day! And what an adventure day that was! We walked over 10km!!! And we got to practice a lot of French prepositions on our walk: “No, no… stay BEHIND me, not IN FRONT OF me…stay ON the sidewalk…walk BESIDE your friend, not ON their heels…” Our first mission - find a geocache. We studied the map and looked for routes, then set off in full sleuth mode. Mission complete! A big thanks to Ms. Angela from Stardom for hiding this treasure for us to find! There were even little prizes inside for us to take home! The bonus, of course, was that we got to see the progress of the flowers that we planted back in April. Most of the seeds have sprouted green stalks at this point, but many of the wildflowers have not yet appeared. Still, we were able to observe the growth and even see how much fuller and bigger our other colourful plants had blossomed. At this point, we had earned a much-deserved picnic break so we headed back to the Athletic Park to hang out for awhile. Most of the boys were too engrossed in a game of California Kickball to get in on the photos! Thank you to all of the parents who shared their photos with Madame. And then for the last leg of our mission... the walk to Osprey for ice cream! We even found a beaver dam along the way. But alas, no sign of the beavers, save for some bubbles in the water that we were CONVINCED were them! There really was no shortage of Vitamin D this week as Friday ended up being outdoor "Primary Fun Day". We loved participating in all of the different stations/activities and we especially loved the freezies we received at the end! Other highlights this week: ...making pop-open pokeballs with Pikachu inside... ...practicing our fine motor skills by making beaded bracelets... ...reinforcing our financial literacy and skip-counting skills by focusing in on the values of various coins...
Could you survive in the forest with very few supplies? - We are ready! We made our plans... ...we gathered our materials, and we set off for an epic adventure to a not-so-far-away land. In this land, we got to be the ones in charge, giving instructions to the adults. They weren't allowed to give us design suggestions - only ask guiding questions. Thank you to some of the parents for the following photos... And while the adults may have quietly expressed doubts about some of our design ideas, in the end, we managed to construct some pretty awesome forest dens. One of them even had a disco ball for dance parties. ;-) And with all the salmon berries and huckleberries that we managed to forage, we were pretty convinced that we could spend the night there, no problem! Hey, look! It's a homemade frisbee! And it actually works! Earlier in the week, we went on another adventure to hide our very own geocache! The exact location is top secret, but we did draw you a map. We have distributed our map to a number of different classes around the school and are eager to see if they end up finding our cache and signing our log book. We had 6 more butterflies emerge from their chrysalis this week, too! Some of us weren't at school last week when the first butterflies were released, so this gave us the perfect opportunity to have a turn holding them. Inside the classroom, it's been a constant woodshop lately. We began our projects for our dads and then got inspired to build other projects, as well. Some of us have also been spending all our play time sanding our creations in an ongoing contest to see who can make theirs the smoothest. We also did some reading, writing and arithmetic this week... promise!
Some other fun photos... Wait!...how did we blink and suddenly it's June?? Our butterflies have begun to emerge from their chrysalis! It has been so exciting to watch them transform and observe their beautiful colours! We released a few of them today and should have even more emerge from their chrysalis by next week that we can set free. Most of us were so excited to try holding them! Afterwards we shared our feelings about it... some of us felt nervous or scared, but then we were surprised at how easy it was and how gentle it felt. We learned a new French phrase: "Ça chatouille" (it tickles). This was a busy week for us with our "Poule Maboule" play, with a live Zoom performance for three other French classes in the school, as well as four separate rounds of filming. ...Not to mention that our classroom was turned into a barn for several days. We've been doing our silent reading and Math work while sitting on bails of hay. But we loved being a part of the set-building! Madame is working away on the video editing and should be able to send the films to the moms and dads in a week or so. The weather has been hot-hot-hot this week, but we found some shade for outdoor literacy centres and a super secret woodwork project. Madame also re-lived her childhood by playing a game of "Kick the Can" with us. Oh, the nostalgia! Other special photos:
