And that's a wrap! What a great last week! So many fun activities, beginning with our 10km round-trip walk to Osprey Village for ice cream with our Big Buddies. We stopped at Bonson Athletic Park first for a picnic and some play time. We even had a DIY spray park! This is a single scoop??! We think it may have been helpful that we know the owners. ;-) And when we got back to the school, a special surprise awaited us!... a couple of our chicks (who have now become chickens!) came back to visit! We were amazed at how soft their feathers are, but also how sharp their little nails are, too! Thank you so much to Crystal and her family for sharing this experience with us!! The next day definitely called for some chill activities. PJ day and Minecraft Education/Scratch Jr! And we ended our chill day with a slurpee surprise! We won the slurpees because of all the points that our teams collectively earned throughout Term 3. But one team took the prize for most points - the "corbeaux" (the crows). They also received a medal for their efforts! Other highlights... ...performing our play one last time for Mme Sweetnam's class! ...receiving super personalized chip bags from Nana Kesler! ...celebrating birthdays with interesting hats. ...watching the intermediates' colour party from afar. ...and finally, planning out and creating obstacles for our "Guinea Pig Olympics". Not all of us appear in this video because Madame said she took the best footage of the guinea pigs and compiled it. If we had tried to get each student in there, too, it would've been a very long video. But all of us did get a chance to be in the guinea pig course and feed them some lettuce. It was more of an eating olympics, really, than anything. Madame also shared this cool car video with us this week and many of us wanted the link. Maybe a teacher gift for next year??? ;-) Happy summer, everyone! Bon été!
It was a celebratory week! We were so thrilled that the Intermediates at our school brought back the FIRST PRIZE TROPHY for our district track meet!! All of the competitors did a little victory parade through the school building and we went all out with our school spirit signs. It was also "Fun Day" this week! We loved going through all the different stations and were having such a great time, Madame included, that we didn't even notice that the whole school had gone in for snack time and we were the only ones left in the field playing with bean bags. Oops! It was also Madame's favourite annual wilderness survival trip to Hoffman! We spent some time designing plans for building a fort with tarps and ropes, then went to the forest and tried to execute those plans. While most of us didn't stick to our original drawings, we came up with some pretty great creations! We also learned about the differences between edible/inedible berries in the forest (and emphasized that we must always ask an adult before eating, even if we think we're sure that we know what they are!). There was definitely a wild salmon berry and huckleberry feast alongside the picnic lunches that we brought. And Nana Kesler even surprised us with Timbits!! Not only did we perform our play for several classes this week, but we also got to be an audience for a Grade 2/3 "Reader's Theatre" and a Kindergarten play. Extra photos...
We had so much fun singing "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" for the seniors yesterday! The organizers hadn't told the seniors that we were coming, so it was a surprise when we walked in singing. Everyone was all smiles, and Mme Whitelock's mom was even in the audience! (So was the mayor... but... Mme Whitelock's MOM!!!) We sang through our song once at the front of the room and then went through it a second time as we made our way through the aisles passing out "Happy Seniors' Week" cards to everyone in the audience. We got to be a surprise for the seniors, but then they had a surprise for US! As we made our way out of the building, there was a cart full of presents and we were told to take one! We could barely believe it, and neither could Madame. She e-mailed the organizer the next day to find out who we could thank for this unexpected generosity and received this reply: "The gifts were from the Ridge Meadows Hospice Society. They were donated three years ago for a joint fundraiser which needed to be cancelled going into the pandemic. They were donated items to their Thrift Store and considered “new enough” for people to purchase by donation as “mystery gifts”. Some gifts were intended for children – which is why it seemed only appropriate to share back with your troupe. Our seniors all received gifts as well – distributed at the same time – and opened in unison like on Christmas morning." So it was a happy day of surprises for everyone! In Math this week, we have been continuing with our exploration of shapes. We've been learning the differences between 2D and 3D shapes, and had fun doing a scavenger hunt for items around the classroom that were spheres, cubes, cylinders and pyramids (the hardest!). We weren't always completely accurate in our collections but we were able to discuss which items didn't quite fit and why. We also learned about edges and vertices (les côtés et les sommets) and how to identify them. On our nature walk this week, we got creative with tarps and ropes. With no adult direction, we created some shelters from the sun!
All of our butterflies emerged from their chrysalises this week so it was time to set them free! In past years, Madame has been able to get some great open-winged photos with most of the students, but this year's butterflies were very much ready for their taste of freedom and didn't want to stay still for the paparazzi or for cuddle time. We managed to snap a handful of quick photos. As often happens in nature, not all of our butterflies survived. We had two that died somehow after emerging so we decided to keep them as specimens and examine them more up close, along with their chrysalises and the skin that they shed when they transformed from caterpillar form. And speaking of butterflies, we did some art! Because butterflies are just way too beautiful to pass up as inspiration. Madame told us that we only had one rule to adhere to - we needed to make them symmetrical. Math meets Art! The results were beautiful, unique creations of all different sizes, shapes, and designs that reflected our personalities. We have also been hard at work creating sets for our upcoming play performances and are getting excited to showcase all our efforts! In Science, we have been learning about the water cycle this week. We loved watching a StoryBots episode all about it and have started an ongoing experiment. Madame placed a vase of water in the courtyard and drew a line around where she had filled the water. Next week we will see how much of the water has evaporated! We've been continuing to practice our "Somewhere, Over the Rainbow" song to perform for the seniors next week. Since we'll be walking and singing at the actual event, Madame wanted to give us an authentic practice experience. Today we went "caroling" around the whole school building, singing our song. We received lots of compliments from teachers and staff who heard and saw us as we went. And it has been "bike to school week"! Those of us who came on our bikes got to put a sticker on our poster and received a tattoo. (Madame let us cheat a little bit and anyone who came on their scooter or walked received one, as well). We had some fun pictures shared with us from Farmer Crystal, who gave us the chicks! They are all healthy and happy on the farm and have grown a lot! One of them ("Piper") turned out to be a rooster, but the rest are all hens. (The white one in the last photo here was not one of ours). Extra photo, because it's cute...
