We had so much fun singing "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" for the seniors yesterday! The organizers hadn't told the seniors that we were coming, so it was a surprise when we walked in singing. Everyone was all smiles, and Mme Whitelock's mom was even in the audience! (So was the mayor... but... Mme Whitelock's MOM!!!) We sang through our song once at the front of the room and then went through it a second time as we made our way through the aisles passing out "Happy Seniors' Week" cards to everyone in the audience. We got to be a surprise for the seniors, but then they had a surprise for US! As we made our way out of the building, there was a cart full of presents and we were told to take one! We could barely believe it, and neither could Madame. She e-mailed the organizer the next day to find out who we could thank for this unexpected generosity and received this reply: "The gifts were from the Ridge Meadows Hospice Society. They were donated three years ago for a joint fundraiser which needed to be cancelled going into the pandemic. They were donated items to their Thrift Store and considered “new enough” for people to purchase by donation as “mystery gifts”. Some gifts were intended for children – which is why it seemed only appropriate to share back with your troupe. Our seniors all received gifts as well – distributed at the same time – and opened in unison like on Christmas morning." So it was a happy day of surprises for everyone! In Math this week, we have been continuing with our exploration of shapes. We've been learning the differences between 2D and 3D shapes, and had fun doing a scavenger hunt for items around the classroom that were spheres, cubes, cylinders and pyramids (the hardest!). We weren't always completely accurate in our collections but we were able to discuss which items didn't quite fit and why. We also learned about edges and vertices (les côtés et les sommets) and how to identify them. On our nature walk this week, we got creative with tarps and ropes. With no adult direction, we created some shelters from the sun!
