This week we took a "field trip" out to the "Friendship Bench" (slightly different than the one pictured here) to remind students of its purpose. If we are feeling lonely, we go and sit on this bench. And if friends see us there, they should ask us if we want to play with them. We may even make some new friends this way! We discovered that the other Kindergarten classes haven't learned about the Friendship Bench yet, but they will be learning about it in the next few days, as well. A secret "Kindness Task Force" is being assembled to keep special eyes on the bench during recess and lunch, especially until all the other classes know the rules of the bench. We have also begun learning about different emotions and how to deal with them. Parents can expect to see a booklet coming home soon with strategies on how students can manage their emotions. Students will colour a star for their favourite strategies and should begin practicing them both at school and at home. The French District Head came into our classroom this week and she and I evaluated the students' reading abilities. If parents are curious about how their children did with the reading assessment, they can contact me. I will use this information to form reading groups based on abilities. The groups are fluid so students can move in and out of them as they struggle with certain concepts or become adept at others. Next week we will begin our Phonics program. Parents can expect to see a book of sounds coming home, to which we will add approximately one sound per day (depending on timing). Students are encouraged to practice the sound at home for a couple of minutes each day. More information will be coming about the program next week!
